Why we went to see Santa even though it's not Thanksgiving yet...

Don't get me wrong. I'm right there with all of the folks who complain about retailers putting out the back to school stuff in June, the Halloween costumes when it should be back to school time (but you can't find any school supplies except in the clearance section), and the Christmas displays in October. I get it. But...

We went to see Santa yesterday.

Here's the deal, though. The whole "Santa" thing is pretty magical this year. When we woke up yesterday and there was snow on the ground, the first question I was asked was, "Is it wintertime yet?" The second question was, "Did Santa come?"

The little man has known for at least a month exactly what he was going to ask Santa to bring him. It hasn't changed. There hasn't been the hint that it was going to waver. He's been consistent. And... the things that he wants are pretty reasonable in terms of not setting up super-high expectations. I'm pretty sure Santa can make it happen.

And, Santa is great at reminding kids to follow directions, help Mom and Dad, brush teeth, and eat vegetables. The whole "naughty or nice" thing still has power.

When Scrooge says, at the end of A Christmas Carol, "I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year," he makes a good point. It's not about a day. It's not about getting presents. The spirit of Christmas is a good thing. So what if it's only November and I haven't cooked my Thanksgiving feast yet?

We had snow yesterday. I played Christmas music. And we went to see Santa.

And it's okay.
